The Maid (2020)- Netflix New Release Movie Review
About the Movie: The Maid is a Thai-language horror movie directed by Lee Thongkham. Co-written by Piyaluk Tuntisrisakul. The Maid stars Ploy Sornarin, Savika Chaiyadej, Kannaporn Puangtong, Theerapat Sajakul and more in the main roles.
The maid is a Horror- suspense thriller with some good scares and a good story. The story starts with a new maid, played by Ploy Sornarin, coming to a mansion to work. But she starts seeing the ghost of a previous maid and the movie revolves around the secret behind the death of the previous maid.
My Review: The Maid has an engaging story rather than just being a horror movie. There are a lot of good scares in the movie. But the movie turns from a horror movie to a revenge story by the mid point of the movie. The twist in the movie is really good. You will never except the turn and after that, the movie turns from a slow horror move into a bloodbath.
All the actors did a very natural and genuine performance. Especially Ploy Sornarin, who played the main protagonist of the movie.
The cinematography is another factor that helped for the scares to be more effective. The music is also very good. Both of this elevated the feel and atmosphere of the movie.
There are some things that are a bit cliche in the first half of the movie. There are also some things that didn't make sense to me. Like, there is a haunted monkey doll in the very beginning of the movie, but after sometime, the monkey is completely forgotten and never mentioned what happened to it or anything. Another thing i noticed was period of the movie. Everything shown in the mansion is 90s, like the dresses, vehicles, tele-phones, etc. But there is a scene when the maid puts an headphone on a kid and use her smartphone to play music. Other than these, the movie is solid.
Positives: Cinematography, Music and the acting made the movie more enjoyable and engaging. The story is also good and new and the suspense and the twists are really good.
Negatives: The movie will feel a little bit cliche and slow in the beginning but it completely changes after some time.
Overall, if you are looking to get terrified, this is not the movie you are looking for, but if you like a good revenge story, definitely I recommend this one.

Yes the Era shown is confusing, car and other things mean that it's 1920s or first half of the 20th century. Then air vent is visible(central a/c weren't there in those times) in one scene the maid is seen eating from a disposable plastic container, wearing modern styled jeans. Then a maid is using a smart phone, they also show a modern fridge and a microwave. Now that's all confusing since the Era is early 20th century.

DeleteOne of the guesses I had was, initially there is a line being told about how the Mistress of the house does not want to move forward in time or something of that kind. Considering how insanely wealthy they are, might have just stuck on that era I suppose.
DeleteAnd regarding the monkey, the end titles picture book kinda trope maybe talks about how the monkey was given by the maid to the baby and its maybe a medium- just a guess on this aspect
