Cold Case Movie Review: A bland and long horror-thriller

Cold Case is an Indian Malayalam-language movie directed by Tanu Balak. Cold Case stars Prithviraj Sukumaran, Aditi Balan, Lakshmi Priyaa, and more in the lead roles.

The film tells the riveting story of a complex murder case, parallelly investigated by a police officer and an investigative journalist in their own way, who eventually cross paths to unravel secrets hey never imagined.

Cold Case Review:

I was really excited to watch another investigation thriller from the Prithviraj in Cold Case. But the movie didn't meet my expectations. Cold Case is a bland and mono-toned investigation thriller that barely manages to keep the story more thrilling.

The movie tries to be a horror movie and an investigation thriller and I felt it affected the movie badly. I think it could have been a much better movie if it committed to just one genre. 

Firstly the horror aspect of the movie was done very poorly. It was filled with some un-necessary jump scares and uses the same old scare tactics we have already seen a hundred times. Sometimes those dragged-out scenes goes nowhere and felt like they were in the movie just to drag-out the runtime of the movie. Personally, I don't understand why the horror aspect was added in the movie as it served no purpose and it ruined the climax for me.

Secondly the investigation aspect of the movie was very slow. I never felt a progress in the story as the police are just walking around, questioning someone, the repeating this many times until it coincidently lead to the murderer.

The whole movie is very slow. The performance from any actors were praise worthy as they spend the whole movie in a bland and emotionless face. An exception would be the performance of Anil Nedumangad and Alencier Ley Lopez, but their screen time was very limited.

The movie does manages to keep the suspense of the movie but it is not dine in any clever way. And I didn't feel a closure from the climax of the movie. It gives a two hour buildup to the climax and just ends suddenly with out any type of closure to any characters and the viewers.

Positives: The movie becomes interesting in the middle but quickly looses that pace. Music is somewhat interesting and helped a bit with the experience.

Negatives: The screenplay could have been better. The performance were average. The story is interesting, but it lost its touch between the horror and investigation aspects.

Overall, if you watch Cold Case without any expectation, I think you will like it. It is an average movie.
