The Light House- Movie Review: The Lighthouse is freaky..
About The Movie: The Lighthouse is a period drama, fantasy, horror movie directed by Robert Eggers. Written by Robert Eggers and Max Eggers. The movie stars Robert Pattinson, William Dafoe and Valariia Karaman in main roles. The movie is in black&white and is shot on 1.19:1 ratio.
The Lighthouse revolves around two Lighthouse keepers, both named Thomas, played by Robert Pattinson and William Dafoe. The movie is set in the 1890s on a remote and mysterious island on New England. The movie is inspired by real life incidents of two real lighthouse keepers from the same period. The movie also has some similarities to some Greek mythologies.
The two lighthouse keepers are send to the island to watch over the lighthouse for four weeks. It is a very unsettling and suspenseful movie as the main characters try hard to maintain their sanity on the isolated island.
My Review: The lighthouse is one of the most unique type of movie i have ever seen. Other than the black and white and the square ratio format, the movie also has very disturbing visuals and frightening characters. The 1.19:3 ratio always maintained a claustrophobic feeling to the movie as the movie is talking about two people stuck with each other in an isolated island. The movie always maintain an unsettling feeling with its disturbing and unsettling shots, creepy music and two amazing actors slowly going insane in front of or eyes. We will not be certain about anything happening before us. Most of the time, we will be confused as the characters in the movie.
Another biggest positive of the movie is Robert Patinson. To be honest, my knowledge of the actor is from Twilight. And you already know how that is. But I was totally blown away by the performance of Robert Pattinson in The Lighthouse. I never imagined Edward from Twilight will have this much rage in him. Both Robert Pattinson and William Dafoe did an amazing performance, possibly one of the best i have seen in a long time. Both the characters go through all sorts of emotions through the movie ranging from anger, sadness, care, love, grief, friendship, sadness, and all there are communicated through strong dialogues and amazing performance by the two actors.
The cinematography, music and Writing is the best i have seen in a long time. The writing if the movie needs a special mentioning. Every dialogue, every insults, every narration, everything was so grounded, poetic and very specific, one which lacks from movies nowadays. The lighting is another factor i really liked. I know it is a black and white movie, but in most of the shots, there is one source of lighting in it, but it is done effectively to show all the necessary details from the characters and the surroundings.
Positives: Cinematography is well done. The music is very unsettling. The performance of the two actors in one of the best i have seen in a long time. The story is very gripping and suspenseful.
Negatives: This is not necessarily a negative, but the movie is not straight forward at all. It does not explain anything and is left to the audience to understand and sort it out. Which i really liked, but might not work for causal viewers.
Conclusion: The Lighthouse is one of a kind movie. It is R Rated due to some disturbing visuals, nudity and some sexual contents. So definitely not recommended for kids. The movie is a little slow for some audience and very disturbing at times. If you enjoy complicated fantasy, psychological horror stories, you will definitely enjoy the movie.
My Rating 4/5
