The Wailing(Korean Movie)- My Review
Synopsis: Soon after a stranger arrives in a little village, a mysterious sickness starts spreading. A policeman, drawn into the incident, is forced to solve the mystery in order to save his daughter.
About the movie: The Wailing is a Korea Horror film released on 2016. The Wailing is directed by Na Hong-jin and stars Kwak Do-won, Hwan-hee Kim, Chun Woo-hee and more in the lead roles. The movie deals with a mysterious Japanese man and the death and mysterious events happened after the arrival of him. The Wailing is a gripping, creepy, horror film with an amazing cast, story, cinematography, background music and creepy and terrifying visuals.
My Review: The wailing is one of the top Korean horror films i have seen. It does not have a lot of jump-scary moments, but the little scenes of horror in the movie is very scary and terrifying. The movie does not rely on any jump-scares but on amazing choreography, music, atmosphere and on the actors.
The movie has a run time of 2h36m (156 minutes), which felt a little long. And while watching the movie, there were some moments where i felt the lag and thought of them as unnecessary scenes, but every scene in the movie will make sense by the end and while you reflect back on the movie after understanding the whole meaning of the story. The movie keeps the audience wondering who t trust and whats going to happen next and how things are happening until the very end of the movie. Even at the end, things are not clearly explained, you will have to think a little to understand what the story and who the characters actually are.
The characters in the movie is done very effectively. Movie took time to show us about the main character (policeman), who he is, how he is, etc. We will have a clear idea about him from the first few scenes of the movie, but pretty music every other characters int he movie is kept in the dart until the very end.
Positives: The cinematography is amazing. The characters and all the actors played them did an amazing job. There are actually some hints on the characters through out the movie which are easy to miss which shows the connection between the character and who they are, i thought that was done cleverly. The background music was very good and added to the creepiness of the movie.
Negatives: I just felt that the character of the mysterious women was under utilized. She just vanished after her first appearance until almost towards the end of the movie, it would have been nice to add her presence to some scenes to add a little more sinister vibe.
Overall, The Wailing is on of the best Korean horror movie i have seen. The movie is very well done. There is a lot of mystery and eeriness to the whole movie. Not everyone might not understand the whole point of the movie easily, and if you don't the movie will be very boring to you. I will definitely recommend The Wailing.
My Rating: 3.5/5
