Uncut Gems(2019)- Movie Review
About the Movie: Uncut Gems is a movie about a fast talking New York city jeweller who is neck deep in dept with a gambling addiction. He is looking restlessly for his big win to finally pay-off his already piled up debt with the wrong persons. The movie shows a man making bad decisions after another digging his own grave but still trying his best to get on top of everything.
Uncut Gems is directed by Benny Safdie and Josh Safdie. Written by Ronald Bronstein along with Josh Safdie. The movie stars Adam Sandler, Julia Fox, Idina Menzel, Kieth William Richards, LaKeith Stanfield and more in main roles.
My Review: Uncut Gems is one of those movies which is heavily focused on one character and the journey he is going through. Howard Ratner played by Adam Sandler is a jeweler in New York. Nothing can go right on his life. He is already neck deep in dept with the wrong people and keeps going down due to his bad decisions. Even-though the character keeps on making bad decisions after another, the audience will care for his and wish for him to come on top in the end.
We will keep wondering how low the character can go before he break and keep expecting him to ruin things for himself due to his constant talking and gambling problem.
The movie is very engaging and thrilling i literally sat on the edge of my seat towards the end of the movie. Adam Sandler did an amazing job playing the role. With out his performance, the movie wouldn't have been this engaging because the movie is really focused on this one character. All the other characters did an amazing job as well, like, Julia Fox, Kieth William Richards and more.
Cinematography is good, it is shot in a way that we are literally following this character around through these situations which adds to the engagement of the audience to the movie. From the first ten minutes of the movie itself, we will get a clear idea of the main character Howard, who he is, what he is going through and what type of guy he is. There is not a second in the movie that i felt it was lagging and not one scene felt unnecessary. There is a scene where Howard is taking the trash out, even that scene is there to define the character more and adds to his life and emotions better.
Positives: Adam Sandler is one of the biggest positive of the movie. The background music is very subtle even though the character is going through hell. The character Howard is well written and we will keep on following him to know how low can he get before he break. There is one scene where he actually break, I thought that was a good moment for he character and felt real and relatable.
Negatives: I didn't feel much negates on the move to talk about.
Overall, Uncut Gems is an engaging movie which will definitely keep you thrilled and engaged through out the entire mvie. But if you are light-hearted and always need a happy ending, this might not be the movie for you. I highly Recommend Uncut Gems. It is available on Netflix.
My Rating: 3.5/5
