Bulbbul- Movie Review: A female perspective of the classic myths

About the Movie: Bulbbul is a Hindi-language supernatural drama written and directed by Anvita Dutt. Bulbbul is produced by Anushka Sharma. The movie stars Tripti Dimri, Rahul Bose, Avinash Tiwary, Parambrata Chattopadhyay and Paoli Dam in the main roles.

Bulbbul tells the tale of a young girl named Bulbbul who is married off when she was very young to even understand what a marriage is, and the hardships and abuses she has to face from husband, who is decades older than her and her brothers, a twin of her husband (who is mentally challenged), and Sathya, who is the same age group as her.

My Review: Bulbbul is one of the most beautifully shot Indian movie i have seen in a while. The movie is a visual treat, with its very atmospheric and colorful surroundings and amazing cinematography. The feel of supernatural environment is elevated even further with the music by Amit Trivedi.

The story of Bulbbul revolves around child marriage, and the oppression women had to face during this period and the ancient myths about witches and supernatural entities. The story is very predictable but the way it leads upto to the big reveal is very good.

All the actors in the movie did an amazing job. They really got in their characters and showed the emotions of love, anger, jealousy, etc very effectively. The main highlight is Tripti Dimri (Bulbbul) who always had a divine and wholesome smile on her face while hiding all the pain and brokenness of her character.

Rahul Bose also did an amazing job of portraying emotional neglect and entitled manhood for the character. He also did an amazing job portraying his twin brother who is mentally challenged.

Positives: The cinematography and music is a major plus in the movie. This has elevated the feel of the mystery in the movie while showing the supernatural feel of the environment and the characters n the movie. All the actors in the movie showed an exceptional performance. They were so believable and natural.

Negatives: While the movie managed to keep its mystery for some time, the story is very predictable and the big reveal at the end didn't had much of an impact as the built up.

Overall, Bulbbul is a visual treat. It has a strong story. While the payoff is not as expected from the built-up of the movie, we sure have something new from the industry.
Bulbbul is available on Netflix.

My Rating: 3.5/5
