Kahaani- Movie Review-A gripping and thrilling journey of a pregnant women

About the movie: Kahaani is an Indian Mystery,Thriller movie directed by Sujoy Ghosh. Written by Sujoy Ghosh, Advaita Kala and Suresh Nair. Kahaani stars Vidya Balan, Parambrata Chattopadhyay, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Saswata Chatterjee and more in the lead roles.

Kahaani is a movie about a pregnant women who comes to Kolkata from London searching for her missing husband. But everyone she questions denies having ever met him.

My Review: Kahaani is a very good gripping suspense thriller. We follow a pregnant women played by Vidya Balan on her search for her missing husband. But everyone pretty much denies ever meeting or seeing her husband. It's like he completely vanished. We get to meet some good characters along the way from police officers, Central Intelligent agents, to some innocent kids. There are some really interesting characters., like the contract killer who looks like a very ordinary uncle who works as an insurance agent. I really liked that character.  Kahaani really grasps the realness and depth of Kolkata and its different kinds of people and their nuances and culture.

Kahaani has a simple story of a wife searching for her missing husband. But the movie is very much complicated and has a lot of layers to it. It is very captivating and keep dragging us deep into the secrets and dark sides of the people around us.

All the characters in the movie is very much real and has different layers to them. Even the police officers and the little kids has a depth to their personality. Even-though the movie is very much focused on Vidya Balan's character, the supporting characters also were given enough attention and has some moments to themselves to show their depth and personality, like when a little kid who offers his radio to Vidya when she is crying, which he has never given to anybody else. Almost all the main characters had moments like these which made them more than just a  two dimensional charters which i very much enjoyed.

The performance in the movie is a big plus. Viday Balan did and amazing job of portraying a strong women alone in the bust world determined to find her missing husband when everyone around her is trying to stop her. Parambrata Chattopadhyay also did a really good job as a police officer who helps her throughout the movie. Another major mention is Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Even-though his screen time is very limited, he did and amazing job with the time he got. Siddiqui has a neutral talent for gaining control over a scene and becomes the center of attention of the scenes he is present in.

The big reveal at the end is very good. even-though i figured it out early on because i was looking for, it was definitely subverted my expectations. There are some subtle hints throughout the movie about the secret throughout the movie, which is really appreciated and thought was very clever.

Positives: Vidya Balan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui is a big plus in the movie. The story is very interesting, gripping and keeps the viewers suspenseful and thrilling throughout the movie. There were a lot of scenes where they could have added a song according to Bollywood standards, but they didn't. Which i really appreciated, because the movie keeps the same pace throughout the movie.

Negatives: We are not given any insight on the main antagonist of the movie, like why he is doing this and his motives or any background]d. I thought it would have been better if he had an interesting motive for doing the things he did.

Overall, Kahaani is one of the best thriller movie i have seen from Bollywood in the recent time. Definitely recommend. Kahaani is available on Netflix.

My Rating: 3.5/5
