Kappela- Malayalam Movie Review- A romance turned Thriller!!
About the Movie: Kappela is a Malayalam Language film directed by Suresh Babu and Muhammed Musthafa. Kappela is written by Muhammed Musthafa and Sudas. The movie stars Anne Ben, Roshan Mathew, Sreenath Bhasi and more in the lead roles.
Kappela is about the story of a young and innocent girl who falls in an over the phone romance with a rickshaw driver from a different city. She decides to visit him for the first time in his city where their meeting is derailed by an encounter with a stranger.
My Review: Kappela starts off as a romantic and feel good movie but turns into a thriller half-way. This is a movie that young girls should watch who find romance through Social Media and over phone conversations only. The movie has a serious message that every young girls should be aware of.
The first half of the movie is a feel good part where the main character Jessy, played by Anne Ben, is well established. The first half takes its time to show who Jessy is and who and how her family is. Jessy and her family represents a typical Malayali family. It starts off simple as the girl goes to another city to meet her boyfriend who she has never seen before. The second half takes a turn with the introduction of a stranger to the story played by Sreenath Bhasi. The movie becomes a thriller from this point.
The main highlight of the movie is Roy, the character played by Sreenath Bhasi. Roy is a mysterious character, he is short tempered and determined. I really liked the character and Sreenath Bhasi did amazing performance for the character with his controlled mannerisms and subtle expressions.
The character of Anne Ben is an innocent village girl much like her previous riles in Kumbalangi Nights and Helen. She showed a very natural and believable portrayal of a typical Malayali girl. Roshan Mathew who played Vishnu, the rickshaw driver also did a very good performance. The trio has shown a very good chemistry and screen presence which made the film more interesting and enjoyable.
Positives: The cinematography and direction is very good, It is known from the very first shot of the movie. The music by Sushin Shyam also made the movie more grounded and added weightage to the story.
Negatives: The story is a little slow in the beginning during the phone conversations between Jessy and Vishnu. But the pace picks up after sometime.
Overall, Kappela is a very good feelgood family movie. I highly recommend to watch for family audience and young girls everywhere. Kappela is available on Netflix now.
My Rating: 3.5/5
