The Old Guard- Netflix New Release Movie Review
About the Movie: The Old Guard is a supernatural action movie directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and written by Greg Rucka. The movie is based on the comic book of the same name. The Old Guard stars Charlize Theron, Kiki Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Harry Melling in the lead roles.
The Old Guard is a super natural action movie of a covert team of four immortal mercenaries who are suddenly exposed and now have to fight to keep their identity a secret and stay alive. The movie starts when they find out that there is another immortal one after a failed mission.
My Review: I really had a good time watching the New Netflix release The Old Guard. It has some great action sequences and has some good moments about friendship, grief and loneliness. The relationship among the characters is very interesting and entertaining. It has a good story and it is beautifully shot.
All the actors did a great performance throughout the movie and also were very good in action. Especially Charlize Therone did a very good job with the action in the movie. The action scenes were very well shot. You can really see what is going on and the stunts and gun action were very well crafted.
The interactions and the relation between the characters were really good to see. There were some great written dialogues and quotes throughout the movie. Also there were some very cringe dialogues at times.
One of the thing that didn't work for me is the music. I am not a fan of using pop-music in movies like this. The usage of pop music during action scenes were a big turn off for me even though all the action sequences is very well crafted and shot very stylistically.
While the concept is fairly new, the story didn't feel very unique to me. It has a story we are very familiar with from a lot of movies with a team of mercenaries and when a big corporate company is trying to capture them to study on them. I have seen it so many times. But the movie does feel fresh due to its added supernatural/superhero elements.
There were no proper explanation given for how they got the power or why. But the movie end with a little tease for a sequel. So maybe they will explain it in the next movies.
Positives: The action sequences were the major plus point of the movie. All the actors did an amazing performance and did great on all the action sequences. I liked the concept of immortal beings through time doing good.
Negatives: The music choices in the movie was a negative for me. The plot felt very familiar. The movie will become very slow at times.
Overall, I really enjoyed The Old Guard due to its many well crafted and adrenaline rushing action sequences. I definitely recommend if you like good action sequences.
